6.Stabilizing Commodity Prices and Preventing Price Manipulation
The stabilization of commodity prices is an important objective of government policies. Being the competent authority in charge of the Fair Trade Act, the Commission investigates whether there is price gouging to prevent businesses from engaging in concerted actions to affect the supply-demand function in the market. In response to the price fluctuations in 2023, the Price Manipulation Prevention Task Force of the Commission continued to function and took part in the operation of the Price Stabilization Committee and the Joint Price Audit Team of the Executive Yuan. The important efforts and achievements are as follows:
(1) The Price Manipulation Prevention Task Force of the Commission continued to operate and keep a close watch on changes in the prices of important daily commodities in the country. Three special project meetings were convened in 2023 to step up surveillance of the prices of important commodities, such as agricultural and animal husbandry products, wheat, soybeans, cooking oil, sugar, powdered milk, bottled LPG, oil products and products for annual special occasions, as well as market conditions.
(2) The task force continued to attend meetings of the Price Stabilization Committee and work with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Justice and Ministry of the Interior through a division of labor. In 2023, the task force presented a report on Measures Taken to Stabilize Commodity Prices around the Chinese New Year.
